||
| Supplies | ||
| Freezer Paper | ||
| Stabilizer | ||
| Glue stick | ||
| Batik scraps | ||
| One of your 14 inch or so background squares (this will be set on the diagonal so requires a larger block for this setting) | ||
| Permanent and a water soluble pen | ||
| Washers (Metal or Teflon from the Hardware Store) | ||
| Lightweight tearaway stabilizer (if you discover that you are not able to stitch pieces to background smoothly without it or if you use a satin stitch) or Ricky Timm's Totally Stable | ||
| Prepare Your Pieces | ||
| Trace all the pattern shapes on your fabric choices (on the reverse
side) with 1/4 inch seam allowance. On the leaves, clip the inside curves. Use a child's watercolor paintbrush and paint the seam allowance of the pieces and then turn the allowance to the back and press down with your fingers. Do the same for the bird and stems. Put a washer on the reverse side of the fabric circle for the grapes. Hand sew a running stitch around the seam allowance of each grape. Pull the thread so that the circle gathers and covers the washer. End the stitching with 3 stitches in place, Iron these little circles flat, Clip the gathering thread and slide the washer out. They should remain as perfect flat circles. |
||
| Prepare Your Background | ||
| Tape the sections of the placement diagram together. Position your background fabric on top of it and trace the diagram with a water soluble marker. You do not have to mark all of every line, just enough so you know how to place the pieces. | ||
Place the Pieces |
||
| Place the pieces as indicated on the diagram, Use glue stick to keep pieces in place and be sure to tuck the raw edges under another piece so they do not show. | ||
| I stitched all these pieces down using a hem stitch in clear thread. You can use any of the stitches mentioned in the former blocks. The thread can be invisible, matching or decorative | ||
