| Supplies | ||
| Freezer Paper | ||
| Stabilizer | ||
| Glue stick | ||
| Batik scraps | ||
| One of your 10 inch or so background squares (this will be set on the diagonal so requires a larger block for this setting) | ||
| Permanent and a water soluble pen | ||
| Lightweight tearaway stabilizer (if you discover that you are not able to stitch pieces to background smoothly without it or if you use a satin stitch) or Ricky Timm's Totally Stable | ||
| Prepare Your Pieces | ||
| Trace the scalloped pieces of the rose on freezer paper and the inside of the rose buds. Cut the inside of the rose buds about 1/2 in larger all around the the template. Adhere the freezer paper to the back of your flower and buds fabric(s)Cut the scalloped pieces and the center on the a scant 1/4 inch outside the pattern line. | ||
| Prepare Your Background | ||
| Fold a 10" square of freezer paper in 8ths. First fold it in
quarters and then fold the quarter in half diagonally so that all open
edges are on the same side. Use the 1/8th template provided. The tip of
the rose bud should be at the outside point of the folded fabric. Trace
the 1/8th pattern on the top fold of your freezer paper. Be sure that
the tip of the rose bud is at the outside point of the wedge Cutting
through all the layers of the paper, cut out you block shape like it was
a paper snowflake. Fold your background fabric in 8ths and iron the creases into the fabric. Now using your fabric folds, line them up with the folds n your snowflake like pattern and iron the freezer paper to the fabric on the front of the fabric. Using a fine washaway marker, trace around the ins and outs of the pattern. Then cut the pattern out of the background fabric. Cut right on the line and leave background fabric in one piece except for the area where the pattern was adhered/ Now you have background fabric with a hole cut out of it that is the shape of your leaf pattern. Cut a square of your leaf fabric that is the same size as the background. Lay your leaf fabric on the table right side up and your background fabric right side up on top of this. Slip your rosebud pieces in the cutouts for the rosebuds. (They will be in between the two fabrics) Use a little glue stick to hold everything together |

Continue Preparing Your Rose pieces. |
||
| Clip into the inside curves of your roses. Then using either a glue stick or white glue (I use a child's water color brush with the white glue), put a little glue along the edges of the fabric that beyond the pattern pieces on the back side of the fabric. Fold the edges over to the back and press to the freezer paper to glue them down. | ||
| While the glue is still soft. Press the second largest flower with your fingers to the top of the largest piece. Stitch the top piece to the bottom piece with any of the following stitches; satin stitch, small buttonhole stitch, zigzag stitch or straight stitch. It depends on the effect you want. Since I like to use thread for accents I used a small buttonhole stitch in a complementary color. | ||
| Turn to the back, cutting through the bottom flower layer, trim out the bottom layer, leaving about 1/4 inch around the inside edge of the hole.. This lessens the build up of fabric in the center. Remove the freezer paper with a little tug, tweezers may help. If you are having difficulty with this spray the pieces with a little water to help you remove the paper | ||
| Repeat this instruction for each of the scalloped pieces. Once you have the whole flower built, then glue or pin it into position on your block. | ||
| You can now stitch everything together. | ||
| You can do this two ways. satin stitch on the edge of the background fabric all around the buds and leaves sections. Continue your satin stitch across the bottom of the bud piece to hide the raw edges. | ||
| Or just ahead of where you are stitching turn the edge under with an awl or small screwdriver. After the first little bit, it goes quite smoothly. Only do a couple of inches at a time. Then you can stitch this down with any kind of stitch including an invisible hem stitch. | ||
| Remember that you are stitching the top layer down and over the edge of it. | ||
| When you are through with this step, sew the flower assembly in place with any of the stitches listed above. | ||
| Another block done! | ||
