Batik Album - A Teaching Sampler

Supplies
  • 1 yd of background fabric
  • 5-6 Fat Quarters for Appliques or Scraps
  • 1 1/4 yds Border (cut 5.5" wide)
  • 3/4 yds Sashing (24 pieces cut 2 1/2" wide X 14 1/2")
  • 1/4 yds Posts ( 24 squares 2 1/2 X 2 1/2" )
  • 3/4 Inner border
  • 4 fat quarters for Settings
  • Dissolve or UltraSolvy
  • Freezer Paper
  • White glue or Roxanne's Glu-Baste-It
  • Child's watercolor brush
  • Sheet of cardstock or other stiff paper or template material that can be ironed
  • A dozen or so teflon or flat metal washers 3/4" - 1"
  • bias bars
  • invisible monofilament thread
  • Assorted threads that contrast with or go with your fabric, contrasting threads give a bolder look. Use fine threads 40 - 60 wt.
  • thin silk pins
  • sewing machine needles 80/12 topstitch and 80/12 jeans-denim
  • Ball point awl
  • Thick straw used for milk shakes or Slurpees
  • Water soluble pen
  • Stabilizers - such\\\ as Heat Away, Water soluble paper, Ricky Tim's Stable Stuff

Optional

Extra fine point permanent pens - black, brown, purple are nice

Additional embellishments if you wish to use them on this quilt - foil, hotfix jewels, fabric paints, fusible web, fancy threads

Clear transparencies used for overhead projectors if you chose a dark background fabric

Light box - you can make one with a large plastic container turned upside down so you can write on the bottom side. Insert a small, inexpensive fluorescent fixture underneath

Freezer Paper Applique Background fabrics should be plain or  a small print or texture

Bird in Wreath

Water Soluble Thread Applique Cut 9  background blocks to 11" square. Trim to 10 1/2 " square after  appliqueing

Horn of Plenty

Brush and Glue Applique Do not use a color just in one block, use it in two or three places to tie your designs together

Rose of Sharon

Reverse Applique Use stabilizers when working on your blocks. This will make your stitching easier and the block will be smoother.

Grape Picker

Circles and Stems Use a machine with multiple stitch types if possible, but you can achieve a good outcome with a straight stitch machine or zigzag stitch. It will just be different.
