Freezer Paper Applique

  Supplies
  Freezer Paper
White glue (such as Elmers) and child's watercolor paintbrush OR
  glue stick OR
  Roxanne's Glu-Baste-It
  Batik scraps
One of your 11" or so background squares
Permanent and a water soluble pen
Lightweight tearaway stabilizer (if you discover that you are not able to stitch pieces to background smoothly without it or if you use a satin stitch)
  Prepare Your Background
Using the pattern, trace the layout of the pieces into the background fabric. Use a light table or hold up to a window if necessary. Be sure to use a water soluble pen.
  Prepare Your Pieces
Turn your pattern over and trace the pattern shapes on the back. The reason for this is that since the freezer paper will go on the back of the fabric, this keeps you from having mirror pieces and your piece will go together as traced on your background fabric.
From the reverse side of your pattern trace the individual pieces of the pattern onto the non-shiny side of freezer paper. with a water soluble or permanent pen
Cut the pieces apart
Using a hot iron with no steam, iron the pieces onto the reverse side of your fabric. If you want all your leaves the same color, you could leave them together on the freezer paper and iron the group of leaves on if you leave about 1/2 inch between pieces. If you have trouble getting the freezer paper to stick properly, try ironing onto a firm surface, like a piece of wood.
Cut out the pieces with the freezer paper on, leaving about 1/4 inch extra around each piece
Assembly your choice of gluing supplies. I prefer white glue and a paint bush as it is cheaper than Roxanne's and it is easier to manipulate than a glue stick.
Apply glue to the seam allowance on the wrong (freezer paper) side
Turn the seam allowance and glue it to the freezer paper. Smooth out wrinkles and points with the end of the handle of your paint brush. If necessary clip into the allowance at the inner points.
For the leaves, turn the allowance at the point straight across. more or less perpendicular to the side edges. Then turn the sides in.
For the stem, do the same thing. Turn the bottom end in first and then so the sides. The top ends of the branches will be under other pieces.
As you finish gluing the edges under on each piece, press it to the appropriate place on the background and the piece will adhere in place.
When you pieces are in place, do one of the following:

Use the hemstitch on your machine and invisible thread to stitch around the pieces
Use the zig-zag stitch on your machine and invisible, matching or contrasting thread to stitch around your pieces
Use the button hole or other decorative stitch and invisible, matching or contrasting thread to stitch around your pieces
Use the straight stitch and  invisible, matching or contrasting thread to stitch around your pieces

In my example, I used a narrow zig-zag stitch and invisible thread

Now, what about that freezer paper. Either cut a small slit in the background from the back of the piece or remove the background from behind the piece leaving a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Spray your block to dampen it. Extract the freezer paper, you may need tweezers.
Press your block
